What does it mean to you?
Does it mean doing what you want to do when you want to do it?
Does it mean no responsibility?
Or is it a ‘feeling’ you get when you do an activity – parachuting, riding a bike down a hill, skiiing/snowboarding?
Does it mean no financial ties?
Or is it ‘space’ from your thoughts or negative feelings?
hmmmm interesting huh?
I’m a self confessed freedom junkie. I love to travel, I love to get rid of the ‘to do’ list and be spontaneous. When I do this I tend to feel ‘lighter’ and more myself.
Let me tell you a little story…..years ago, my hubby and I sold a bunch of our stuff – our car, tv, washing machine etc and bought a one way ticket to Latin America. It felt a little reckless but oh my did it feel good. I didn’t realise beforehand that ‘stuff’ can make us feel really weighed down. And how much we don’t need a lot of the things we hold on to and how this can keep us a little ‘stuck’ and not moving forward with our life or our dreams.
And you know what’s crazy…? I really didn’t miss much of the stuff – instead my attachment to it was replaced with a sense of adventure and freedom.
I’ve been pondering this a lot recently and I think that we can have a tendency to psychologically use our ‘stuff’ as an excuse not to do the things we dream of.
It all seems too hard. So we settle. Settle for comfort, settle for ease, security, safety.
How do I know this? Because I have had these excuses too…… If you asked my Mum she would agree that I was the most scared child. I hated change, I liked everything to stay the same, to be safe, comfortable and predictable. I had my special seat at the table, on the couch. I was a creature of habit. I did the same things and I pretty much got the same things back in return.
Life was good but something but by the time I got into my 20’s something was like, sort of lacking….. And I began to have a yearning, dreams and a vision of a different sort of life.
And for some reason in my early 20’s. I decided to start following my dreams.
I began to let go little by little of my need to hold on and direct every little minutiae of detail of my predictable life. I opened up to the universe of possibility and followed my dreams. I followed love and not fear and each time and after each adventure my eyes opened and I grew a little stronger.
I did however in my late 20’s, early 30’s fall into the ‘comfortable’ trap. We had the house, the car, all the things, but no longer the freedom. I could almost predict the next 5, 10 years or so….and that’s when ‘freedom’ came knocking again.
Over the past 5 years we have travelled through Latin America, the US, India and Europe, and lived for stints in London and Barcelona, however we’ve now returned to Melbourne, Australia. A city I now call home. Coming back to live somewhere more permanently has been great, a little bit of a shock, but also freeing in a different sort of way. We’ve held on to the same mentality that we had while travelling, and we are working hard to create a lifestyle of freedom whilst also having a base, our home.
And you know what I’ve pondered, reflected and meditated about over these past few months?
That if you dream about what you want, talk about it, write about it, ask for it, visualise it, and most importantly begin taking action towards it, you will receive it in time.
Most of the time when people are living a freedom lifestyle and living a life that’s connected with their truth and their values, it’s not a result of being more fortunate than others, it’s that they worked out what they wanted and then went for it. They made some sacrifices for sure, but they made the decision and chose a life aligned with what matters most to them.
This is a commitment I have made to living my life and I love to share this journey with others in the hope to inspire more people to create a life of their dreams and follow their intuition. I coach women who are feeling a little stuck, and looking to make their dreams (no matter how large or small) a reality.
I believe that true health and happiness begins with choosing what matters most to us and taking action towards making it a reality.
